ALTERNATES/JV BLOCK The Clover Band is A BIG BAND? COULD MY Child get CUT from the Band?
All Students in the Clover Band are part of the Clover Band! One for All and ALL for ONE. Alternates/JV Block members are members of the Band Program and serve an extremely important role in the marching band. There is a plethora of reasons why a student may be in the JV Block/Alternate status such as the following reasons.
It is inevitable that some band members will be out sick for several days.
A few may choose to leave the program.
Others may not comply or be able to meet marching band obligations in full.
Students may also still be developing skills and need extra help in visual and/or musical areas.
There is also the instrumentation of the ensemble to consider when we design our competitive and game day shows.
For our ensemble sound to be its best, we must think through and make decisions about numbers based on how we create a balanced ensemble sound. Alternate/JV Block members are extended ALL the same privileges as a regular member with the exception of having a more variable position in the competition show drill. They will have a JV drill spot that is designed to help them learn in a scaffolded manner as they continue to develop. As show opportunities present themselves, they may be offered the opportunity to support the show in other ways to help enhance the overall show. Alternates will travel to every event requiring the full band, participate in all performances non-competitive, and otherwise. On competition days, alternates will help with necessary logistics and/or play show music from the sideline during the band’s performance unless otherwise directed by staff/directors. A student’s performance status is at the discretion of the directors, as they serve as the expert(s). Status is determined by participation in the Band Spring Training. Directors/Staff will work through visual and musical skills and explain to students the main areas that are the cornerstones of what we are looking for and the variable levels of skills. Here is a Link to the Skills (Musical & Visual) that were introduced at Spring Training and will be the skills that will be evaluated during the first two weeks of band camp. LINK - Tasks/Skills During Pre-Camp/Early Band Camp days, the staff will continue evaluating the students before assignments into the competitive drill and/or JV drill are decided. The Directors and staff will have a reference rubric for skill sets and students who are in the developing categories will be given careful considerations before decisions are made. If the students are being assigned through instrumentation considerations, the staff will also discuss if there are opportunities for students to play/perform in needed areas of the program. (IE: Alto vs Tenor or Bari, or Baritone vs. Tuba, etc.).
While these policies do have areas that serve for punitive reasons, most of the students in the Alternate/JV category are not in it for punitive reasons.
